What does a birth preparation course with me look like?

Interactive

I’ve designed an interactive course because learning should be fun and engaging, not boring. Traditional teaching methods often make people lose interest. With interactive courses, you can participate actively and apply what you’re learning right away.

By including group discussions, hands-on activities, and real-life examples, my courses create a welcoming environment where you’ll feel comfortable sharing your thoughts, making learning more effective and enjoyable for everyone.

Evidence-based

Hypnobirthing isn't based on myths—it's rooted in science! You'll gain access to the most effective, research-backed tools and techniques, ensuring you feel prepared, empowered, and in complete control. Forget about whale music and cringey visualisations; we will focus on practical, proven strategies to help you approach birth with confidence. This is why I’ve used Hypnobirthing as the basis of my antenatal courses.

Empowering

Your body is naturally equipped for childbirth. At Nurtured Birth & Beyond, I'm dedicated to helping you unlock your inner strength, guide you in asking the important questions, and empower you to make informed, confident decisions about your birth.

Frequently asked questions

Why do you interchange between different terms for your course?
Plus Icon - Inner Webflow Template

I use the terms "birth education" and "birth preparation" as well as "hypnobirthing" because my course content includes more than just hypnobirthing techniques. In addition to the standard hypnobirthing teaching like self-hypnosis, relaxation, and positive affirmations, my courses cover essential information about the stages of labour, pain relief options, postpartum care, and more. This comprehensive approach ensures that parents are well-prepared for all aspects of childbirth and beyond. Sometimes using these terms in different contexts helps to highlight the holistic nature of my courses, which offer a well-rounded education and introduction to practical skills to support parents throughout their entire birthing journey.

Will using Hypnobirthing techniques make my birth pain-free?
Plus Icon - Inner Webflow Template

The simple answer is no, it is best that you prepare yourself for the fact that there is no guarantee that labour or birth will ever be completely pain-free, no matter how much you practise the various techniques. Every birth experience is unique, and the level of pain felt can vary greatly from person to person.

However, Hypnobirthing helps you manage pain more effectively by understanding your mind-body connection and using a combination of proven relaxation, breathing techniques, and positive affirmations. These techniques work together to help you stay calm and focused during childbirth, which can have a significant impact on your perception of pain and your overall birth experience.

Relaxation techniques help to reduce tension in your body, which can alleviate some of the physical discomfort associated with labour. Breathing techniques ensure that you remain calm and oxygenated, aiding your muscles in working more efficiently during contractions. Positive affirmations reinforce a mindset of confidence and empowerment, helping to reduce fear and anxiety, which can often exacerbate the sensation of pain.

While Hypnobirthing may not eliminate pain entirely, many people find that it helps them cope better and feel more in control during childbirth. The goal is to transform your birthing experience into a more positive and manageable one.

When should I start birth preparation course?
Plus Icon - Inner Webflow Template

It's generally recommended to start between 16-34 weeks of pregnancy. This timeframe gives you ample opportunity to know your options early, determine what will work best for you and practice to become comfortable with the various techniques before your due date. Starting within this window mean you have plenty of time to absorb the information, ask questions, and integrate the techniques into your routine.

However, some clients may feel particularly anxious about birth and might prefer to start earlier than 16 weeks. Beginning earlier can provide extra time for preparation and help alleviate any concerns by building confidence and familiarity with the techniques.

If you discover Hypnobirthing later in your pregnancy, it's still possible to benefit from taking a course. Even if you're 34 weeks or beyond, you can still gain valuable insights and learn effective techniques to support a positive birth experience. In such cases, please get in touch with me, and we can discuss how I can best assist you in preparing for your upcoming birth.

Is Hypnobirthing just about mind control?
Plus Icon - Inner Webflow Template

No, Hypnobirthing is not mind control. It focuses on self-hypnosis, relaxation, and positive thinking to help you remain calm and focused during childbirth. The key difference is that with Hypnobirthing, you are given the resources to help you feel in control and fully aware of your surroundings.

Think of self-hypnosis as a deeply relaxed state similar to daydreaming. When you daydream, you're aware of where you are and can snap out of it at any time. Similarly, in self-hypnosis, you remain conscious and aware, with the ability to respond to anything happening around you.

Hypnobirthing techniques are designed to help you enter this relaxed state intentionally, allowing your body to work more efficiently during labour. By staying calm and focused, you can reduce anxiety and tension, which can help manage pain and create a more positive birthing experience.

Self-hypnosis is a natural state that you can learn to access and use effectively during childbirth. It's about empowering you with the skills to manage your birthing experience, rather than controlling your mind. The techniques promote a sense of control and confidence, helping you feel more prepared and at ease throughout the process.

Does my birth partner need to come with me?
Plus Icon - Inner Webflow Template

While it's not mandatory for your birth partner to attend the classes, it is highly beneficial if they do. Birth partners play a crucial role in the birthing process, and attending the classes together can significantly enhance their ability to support you effectively.

By participating in the classes, birth partners will gain a thorough understanding of the birth process and the techniques you are learning. This knowledge equips them to reinforce the Hypnobirthing techniques you've practiced together, providing consistent and knowledgeable support during labour.

Additionally, birth partners can act as your advocates, helping to communicate your preferences and needs to the medical team. Their presence can be incredibly reassuring, helping to keep you calm and focused, especially when they understand the physiological processes your body is undergoing during labour.

Also attending the classes together can strengthen your bond and create a shared sense of teamwork, preparing both of you for the journey ahead. The confidence and skills gained by your birth partner can contribute to a more positive and empowered birthing experience for both of you.

When I decided to do my hypnobirthing course my husband was very sceptical about it, however he listened to how much I wanted to do it and agreed to come along. After the first session he told me how valuable he felt it was and that he wished we had invested in this before our first was born.

Aren’t Hypnobirthing techniques only for homebirths?
Plus Icon - Inner Webflow Template

No, Hypnobirthing techniques are not exclusive to homebirths. They can be used in any birthing environment and circumstance, whether it's a hospital, birthing centre, or at home. The techniques are incredibly versatile and can be adapted to suit your chosen birth setting.

Hypnobirthing focuses on self-hypnosis, relaxation, and positive affirmations to help you stay calm, relaxed, and focused during childbirth. These techniques can be beneficial in any setting because they help reduce anxiety, manage pain, and create a more positive birthing experience.

In a hospital or birthing centre, the techniques you’ll learn on my course can help you navigate medical interventions and maintain a sense of control and calmness. They can also assist in creating a more relaxed and supportive environment, even in a clinical setting.

Hypnobirthing techniques have been used successfully during caesarean births. Many people find that these techniques help them stay calm and in control, reducing stress and anxiety during the procedure. By using Hypnobirthing techniques, you can create a more positive and empowering experience, regardless of the type of birth you have.

Can I teach myself Hypnobirthing?
Plus Icon - Inner Webflow Template

While it's possible to learn some Hypnobirthing techniques on your own through books and online resources, attending a class with a certified instructor offers numerous additional benefits. A certified instructor provides personalised guidance tailored to your unique needs and concerns, ensuring that you fully grasp the techniques and can apply them effectively. They offer support and encouragement throughout your learning journey, helping you build confidence and address any questions or challenges you may encounter. Furthermore, a certified instructor can offer insights and practical advice based on their extensive experience and training, giving you a deeper understanding of the techniques and how to integrate them into your birth plan.

Do I need to know about birth to get the most out of the course?
Plus Icon - Inner Webflow Template

No, you don't need any prior knowledge about birth to benefit from my courses. My birth education and Hypnobirthing classes are designed to be comprehensive and accessible to everyone, regardless of their prior experience or knowledge.

The courses begin with a thorough education on birth and labour, providing you with all the essential information you need. You'll learn about the stages of labour, how the body works during birth, different pain relief options, and what to expect during the postpartum period. This foundational knowledge helps you understand the birthing process and prepares you for what lies ahead.

Once you have a solid understanding of the basics, the course then introduces you to Hypnobirthing techniques, which include self-hypnosis, relaxation, and positive affirmations. These techniques are taught step-by-step, ensuring that you feel comfortable and confident in using them. The goal is to equip you with practical skills that can help you manage pain, reduce anxiety, and create a more positive birthing experience.

By combining birth education with Hypnobirthing techniques, my courses ensure that you are well-prepared for childbirth, both mentally and physically. This holistic approach allows you to feel empowered and in control, regardless of your previous knowledge or experience.

Are Hypnobirthing courses available on the NHS?
Plus Icon - Inner Webflow Template

Some NHS trusts offer Hypnobirthing techniques within their antenatal classes, but availability and what they offer can vary. Currently I am unaware of any trusts who offer these classes with this region.

What is the difference between NCT and Hypnobirthing?
Plus Icon - Inner Webflow Template

NCT (National Childbirth Trust) is a UK charity dedicated to supporting parents throughout pregnancy. They offer antenatal preparation courses that cover essential topics such as the birth process, pain management, and possible interventions. On the other hand, my birth education and Hypnobirthing courses provide a comprehensive antenatal course that includes all of these topics, along with a toolkit of evidence-based techniques. With an understanding of the science behind Hypnobirthing, you can navigate the maternity system more effectively and assist your body in birthing your baby as smoothly as possible.

Can you still use Hypnobirthing techniques when you have an epidural?
Plus Icon - Inner Webflow Template

Yes, you can still use Hypnobirthing techniques even if you choose to have an epidural or any other pain medication. The relaxation and breathing techniques taught in Hypnobirthing can be incredibly beneficial throughout your labour and delivery, regardless of the pain relief methods you opt for.

Hypnobirthing focuses on helping you maintain a sense of calm and control during childbirth by using self-hypnosis, deep relaxation, and positive affirmations. These techniques are designed to work alongside any pain relief options you choose, enhancing your overall birthing experience.

Practicing Hypnobirthing techniques during pregnancy helps your body get prepared for birth. It promotes relaxation and reduces tension, allowing your body to work more efficiently and effectively during labour.  When you have an epidural, you might not feel the physical sensations of contractions as intensely, but the emotional and psychological aspects of labour are still present. Hypnobirthing techniques can help you stay mentally and emotionally grounded, reducing anxiety and promoting a positive mindset. By practicing deep breathing and relaxation, you can create a serene atmosphere, making the experience more enjoyable and less stressful.

Additionally, even with an epidural, you might experience some discomfort or pressure during the later stages of labour. Hypnobirthing techniques can help you manage these sensations effectively, allowing you to remain focused and composed. They can also assist you in conserving energy and staying in tune with your body, which can be especially helpful during the pushing phase.
