Packing for labour: like preparing for the most important holiday of your life

Packing for labour is a little like preparing for an exciting trip, but with more mystery and a once-in-a-lifetime destination—meeting your baby. However, when things feel so unknown, deciding what to pack can seem overwhelming. Here’s how to approach it with confidence and ease, while embracing a bit of flexibility along the way

Think about what makes you feel comfortable

Much like planning a holiday, your hospital bag should be full of items that bring comfort and calm. Are there clothes or items you always reach for when you need to relax? For labour, this might be a soft robe, fluffy socks, or even your favourite pillow. Packing these familiar touches can make a sterile hospital environment feel more like home.

Focus on the essentials first

When you’re not sure what lies ahead, start with the basics - what you know you’ll need no matter what. This includes items like maternity pads, newborn clothes, nappies, and comfortable postpartum outfits for yourself. Think of it as the equivalent of packing your passport, phone, and wallet for a trip - it’s your must-have foundation.

Pack for different possibilities

Labour can be full of surprises, so think of your bag as a toolkit for handling different scenarios. For instance, pack some energy snacks and drinks in case you’re in for a long haul, but also include items for a quick exit, like a lightweight going-home outfit. Whether it’s like a tropical getaway or a trek through unexpected terrain, you’ll be ready.

Keep the “destination” in mind

The goal is meeting your baby, so try to make packing part of the excitement. Think about what will make those first moments together special - a soft blanket for baby cuddles, a camera for photos, or even a playlist for the background soundtrack of your newborn’s first hours.

Embrace flexibility

No trip ever goes exactly to plan, and labour is no exception. It’s okay if your hospital bag isn’t perfect or if you don’t use every single item you pack. What matters is that you have the basics covered and enough options to keep you feeling prepared.

Some top packing essential that can easily be forgotten

A compact foldable laundry bag - This keeps your hospital bag from turning into a chaotic mess when it’s time to head home. You can toss in worn or soiled clothing, keeping them separate and ready for washing.

Small thank-you notes or treats - Pack a few ready-to-go thank-you notes or wrapped treats to give to hospital staff who go above and beyond. It’s a small gesture with a big emotional impact. Both of my births I ended up going back to the hospital a few weeks later to pop the staff a gift, I wish I had thought about this before and taken it with me to make sure the staff knew I appreciated them in the moment.

Reusable dry and wet bags - Use these to organise items like toiletries (in the wet bag) and separate clean clothes from soiled ones. They’re eco-friendly and keep things tidy in your bag.

Pre-washed pillowcases or blankets with your home scent - Hospitals can feel unfamiliar, but having items that smell like home can be incredibly grounding and comforting during labour and recovery.

Packing for labour is about more than just practicality - it’s about feeling ready for this life-changing event.

Treat it like you’re preparing for the adventure of a lifetime, and remember, you can always adjust and add to your bag as you go.
