When a person feels fear or stress during labour, their body releases adrenaline—often called the "fight or flight" hormone. Adrenaline can slow down or even stall the labour process by tightening muscles, including those in the uterus. The Gate Control Theory of Pain supports this idea. According to the theory, the brain can reduce pain signals by focusing on non-painful stimuli, such as calming affirmations or soft breathing. Techniques like massage and water immersion during hypnobirthing are also supported by this theory, as they further relax the body and promote calmness.
Scientific Evidence: A randomised controlled trial published in BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth showed that women who practiced hypnobirthing reported lower pain scores and shorter labour durations compared to those who didn’t.
